Valerie Mathis was an American agent of the Deuxieme Bureau, the French external military service, as well as being an old flame of James Bond. Years after they seperated, he encountered her again at the Casino Royale, where she was now the girlfriend of Soviet spy Le Chiffre. Unbeknownst to both Bond and Le Chiffre, she was in fact working undercover to get close to Le Chiffre.

Valerie appeared as Bond's main love interest in Casino Royale, giving her the distinction of being the first Bond girl to appear on screen, and was played by Linda Christain. Her character was a combination of two characters from the novel, Bond girl Vesper Lynd and Deuxieme Burea agent Rene Mathis.
